Homemade Hush Puppies

  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add chopped onion and mix well.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together buttermilk and egg.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry mixture and stir until just combined.
  5. Heat oil in a deep pot over medium heat.
  6. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil and fry until golden brown.
  7. Remove hush puppies and drain on paper towels.
  8. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Add some chopped jalapeños for a spicy twist.
  • Serve with a side of tartar sauce or honey for dipping.
