  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 6 to 8 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 egg (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, salt, and sugar. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Roll out half of the dough to fit a 9-inch pie plate. Place the bottom crust in the pie plate.
  4. In another bowl, toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice. Fill the pie crust with the apple mixture.
  5. Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the apples. Seal and flute the edges. Cut slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  6. Brush the top crust with beaten egg.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce temperature to 350°F (175°C) and continue baking for 35 to 45 minutes.

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a pinch of nutmeg with the cinnamon.
